Nestled in the beautiful heart of Budapest, Kossuth Square is Hungary’s most important central plaza. Surrounding the country’s historic Parliament Building, this popular destination attracts tourists, students, and government officials alike, often playing a notable role in state protocol events. A major reconstruction project from 2012 to 2014, part of a broader modernisation effort, aimed to improve the area’s aesthetics, pedestrian access, and overall functionality. The project revitalised the square with expanded green spaces and modern amenities, creating a more welcoming environment for its many visitors.
Although the square’s irrigation system had previously been upgraded with a new control system, valves, and sprinklers, the operator remained unsatisfied with the performance. To improve it, the development team sought a more water-efficient solution with easier programmability and management. A significant challenge was retaining the existing pipe and cable network while maintaining current parameters and cross-sections. Typically bustling from morning to evening, the square and its surrounding green spaces needed a solution that ensured a seamless transition with minimal public disruption.
To address the site’s unique challenges, the team chose various top-performing Hunter products as the foundation of their retrofit. In addition to offering optimal water savings, remote management capabilities, and unmatched reliability, the products came with the outstanding professional and technical support needed to ensure seamless installation and operation.
With a precise redevelopment plan promising optimal water savings, the team replaced the existing drip irrigation in flower beds and shrub areas with high-elevation Pro-Spray Sprinkler Bodies and MP Rotator Nozzles. This ultra-efficient pairing eliminated drip tubing connections, greatly simplified green area maintenance, and provided low-intensity water application and maximum distribution uniformity to keep the landscape healthy year-round.
The team also installed PGP Ultra and I-20 Rotors across the surrounding lawns, ensuring water reached beneath the tree canopies without splashing nearby statues.
Today, the PGV Valves, controlled by the EZ Decoder System, deliver precise yet flexible irrigation. With the Hydrawise Irrigation Management Platform and Hydrawise-enabled HCC Controller, the team now has on-site remote irrigation control for optimising watering schedules based on irrigation reports and local weather data.
