HSJ - Swing Joints

Heavy-duty HSJ Swing Joints are available in a range of inlet, outlet, size, and length configurations for any irrigation system. Pair them one-for-one with any Hunter golf rotor purchase to extend the golf rotor warranty from three to five years. HSJs are an ideal complement to commercial Hunter I-Series rotors as well. The following topics are discussed in the article below:

Flexibility

Every HSJ Swing Joint provides full 360° movement to allow for correct rotor installation height and vertical positioning. Each swing joint includes an O-ring pre-assembled at the factory. The joints are prelubricated and should not be preassembled prior to installation.

Sealing

Proper sealing is key for correct operation and top performance. During installation, leave one or two threads visible, with four to five threads engaged inside. The O-ring should be located in the middle of the thread sealing area. From this point, the HSJ Swing Joint can be easily raised, lowered, or moved side-to-side. Raise, reset, or repack heads at the correct height as needed after initial installation.

Installation

To properly use the HSJ Swing Joint swivels, perform the following steps prior to installation:

  1. Gently tighten each O-ring swivel joint by threading clockwise until it bottoms out and can no longer turn.
  2. Next, turn out the male-threaded part one full turn counterclockwise. This allows the joint to swivel a full 360°. The fitting will appear loose, as the seal is created by the internal O-ring.
  3. Install the HSJ elbow to lateral pipe tee perpendicular as seen in Figure 7. If aligned incorrectly, the HSJ will not lower properly.
  4. Ensure a 30° to 45° orientation to the lateral.  This will help with absorbing heavy equipment on the top outlet.

IMPORTANT: Do not disassemble any HSJ in the field. The O-ring may get dirty or damaged, which will create a bad seal.

SnapLok

There may be occurrences where there is tension on the HSJ Swing Joint from pulling a garden hose or even temporarily using a large rotor on a Quick Coupler valve. The SnapLok® collar is used to stabilize the Quick Coupler valve when installed on the HSJ Swing Joint. Use the simple steps below for installing the Snaplok.

  1. Prior to the installation of the Quick Coupler valve, slide the included RING onto the brass Quick Coupler valve.
  2. Apply Teflon tape to the male, brass threads, then tighten the quick coupler valve onto the male, brass threads.
  3. Using the two Snaplok HALVES, snap and lock them around the hex base of the Quick Coupler valve. One hex adapter (1"x ¾") is included if a ¾" Quick Coupler valve is used.
  4. Slide the RING over the two SnapLok halves to secure in place.
  5. Using a
12-18" (30-45 cm) piece of SCH40 PVC, slide through the PVC coupler opening to stabilize.
  6. For additional support using two pieces of rebar, slide through the two circular openings at each side of the Snaplok.
